Motion (Rule 14)
Councillor Lee to move: -
“That Councillor Maureen Charlesworth has given nearly 30 years dedicated service to the residents of Hastings. She was first elected in 1989 representing St Helens Ward. She has since represented Central St Leonards and Maze Hill. Councillor Charlesworth has served 2 years as Deputy Mayor and 4 years as Mayor of this Borough. Her dedication to civic life is further evidenced by her tireless service to volunteer organisations and charity groups such as the chess congress, the Hastings trolley bus restoration group, president of the Hastings Week committee, veterans associations, hoteliers associations, SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Air Force Families Association), the Royal British Legion and many more besides. To this end the Council resolves that Councillor Maureen Charlesworth should receive the Freedom of the Borough of Hastings.”
Note: Under Section 249(5) of the Local Government Act 1972 a resolution to admit to be honorary freemen has to be passed by not less than two thirds of the members voting at the meeting. Abstentions do not count as a vote for this purpose.
Minutes:
Councillor Lee proposed a motion in respect of the award of Freedom of the Borough, which was seconded by Councillor Street.
RESOLVED (unanimously) that Councillor Maureen Charlesworth has given nearly 30 years dedicated service to the residents of Hastings. She was first elected in 1989 representing St Helens Ward. It was noted that Councillor Charlesworth would not be able to use the title whilst she is a sitting Councillor. Councillor Charlesworth will be presented with the Freeman’s Roll at Annual Council on 18 May 2016.
